Advice On Making A Small Home Office Seem Larger

By Otto On April 30, 2010 Under Business

Of late, more and more people have found that they need to create a functional office at home. There are those who work at home full time, as well as those who have started a home based business part time. Regardless, they often find themselves challenged with the task of turning the smallest room in their home into a functional office. Fortunately, there are ways to maximize usable space.

Floor space in a home office is often at a premium. Instead of sacrificing it to a bookcase, consider wall shelves. A good type consists of metal poles that are screwed into studs in your wall. The poles have slots, spaced at regular intervals, into which brackets are inserted at the heights you select. Shelves placed over the brackets can hold books, but can also accommodate a lamp, small printer, or fax machine.

You can gain usable space with a corner computer workstation. Shaped like a triangle, these fit snugly into the corner and can hold all the equipment you need. Some of them may be a little longer, diagonally, than a rectangular style, but the depth is usually much less.

Those who make money online should invest in a comfortable chair for the home office. You will be spending a lot of time at your computer, and a poor chair can increase tension and back pain. However, in a home office you may not have enough room for an executive chair. You might want to consider a kneeling chair, which takes up little space, that you alternate with your normal chair to alleviate back strain.

A neat workstation desk is vital when your work area is limited. Plastic baskets can be used to consolidate items like note pads, staplers, and spare pens. The baskets can then be placed on the shelves if you wish to remove them from the desk. Instead of having to move many small individual items when you need to clean or dust, you only have to move the basket.

Consider new ways to use the closet in your office. It is often helpful to remove the hanging rod. Shelves can be built along the closet walls for storage. You can also use the closet to hold your rolling file cabinet or bookcase, thereby saving floor space in the room. You could even place your stereo on a closet shelf if it is possible to open the door while you are listening to music.

Having an office at home can offer unique rewards, but also unique challenges. The more comfortable and spacious your office feels, the less you will notice the stress. If you optimize whatever space is available to you, you might discover that not only your morale but also your productivity has increased.
