Pergola Patios – The Perfect Landscape Additions

By Otto On September 1, 2010 Under Home Improvement

There’s no better way to add class to your patio than to add a pergola. These lovely structures bring height, grace, and beauty to any area where they are installed, and pergola patios make exceptionally nice outdoor spaces. You can take a mundane space or an unsightly blemish and restore the area to new life with a pergola. You can find many plans online for building your own pergola if you have carpentry skills. You can also buy kits that advertise they are easy enough to be put together in one day, or you can hire a professional carpenter to do the job for you. However you go about it, you’re sure to love the finished product.

Pergolas that look like the ones we have now were first introduced in the 17th century. At that time they were heavy stone edifices supported by massive columns. When more natural gardens came into vogue in the 18th and 19th centuries, pergolas were no longer in style.

Prepare or Beware

If possible before the first frost, rake debris and leaves from the lawn to allow sunlight and the earth’s nutrients into the soil during the winter. Keeping the lawn free of dead or dying organic matter will prevent disease and mold from setting in. The act of raking also lightly aerates the soil, allowing a deeper penetration of sun and moisture.

Once these plans are done you will definitely be ready to start planting. Putting beautiful plants into the ground will give you a great sense of accomplishment. Keep in mind that you’re not even limited to plants in your backyard plans for landscaping. Rocks and small water ponds can be a great addition as well.

Other backyard plans deal with physical structures. If you have children in your family you might want to design backyard plans for a playhouse. This playhouse can be in a tree or on the ground. Since you’ll want to make sure everything will be safe be sure to design good plans.

Check The Lawn pH

Before winterizing, make sure the lawn’s pH levels are optimal. PH levels can shift due to rain and leaf cover, so pick up a pH testing kit at a garden center to make sure your lawn is at a healthy level. Healthy pH levels allow the lawn to better absorb nutrients and prepare it for new spring growth. PH levels can be adjusted using specific fertilizer formulated to restore balance.

By properly winterizing the lawn, the beautiful green carpet of springtime is just a few short months away
