Constructing A Poultry Coop Checklist

By Otto On May 25, 2010 Under Pets

If you’re seriously considering raising chickens in your yard, it’s best to read and meticulously judge every one of the following factors before getting your feet wet.

This is to be sure that you are prepared, ready, willing and able to do what needs to be done so as to get the maximum out of yard chicken raising.

Space: Though you do not have to build chicken coops as big as your house, chickens do need sufficient space to wander in.  Ensure that there’s sufficient room in your yard where they can do their thing.

Time: Though chickens need very little care you want the time to fasten then in their coops safely at night and let out again in the morning.  They also must be given fresh water and feed daily.  Coop cleaning can be done on a weekly, bi-weekly or scheduled basis depending on the quantity of chickens you have.

Cost: Although the opening investment may appear high due to feed costs and bedding costs, chickens customarily pay for themselves several times over with their daily eggs, chickens beef and the hours of delight they bring as pets.

How Many: The number of chickens actually depends upon the space you have available.  The rough guide is to have 3 or more because of the quirky group mentality of chickens!  And if you want roosters too the counseled proportion is 1 rooster for each 10 hens but you have to know that roosters aren’t necessary for hens to lay eggs!

Neighborhood limitations: Check if your town or city has restrictions on keeping chickens in your property before you begin to build a chicken coop.  As a pleasantness to your neighbors, it is a sensible idea to tell them of your scheme (especially if they are next door neighbors, more so if you have got a rooster).

Free Ranging: As much as practical, make sure that your chickens can enjoy free ranging but ensure that their free ranging area is secure from predators, including your neighborhood dogs.  If your chickens don’t have a big enough area wherein they can free range, build them a safe pen since they need the clean air and exercise.

There you are!  These are the 1st steps towards raising chickens and building a chicken coop in your yard.
