A good boat motor is a crucial part of ship safety.  Without a dependable ship motor you could find yourself stranded out in the water a long way from the dock.  Many folks decide to save some money by getting a used boat motor.  If you know what to have a look for you can find one which is safe and trustworthy as well as inexpensive.  A second hand ship motor will have many different parts which work in cooperation to move the ship through the water.  The main parts of a used ship motor include the propeller, the engine, and various other parts which are built into the unit.  

New ship motors will come with some type of warranty which protects the buyer from manufacturer’s defects.  A defective motor which is under guaranty will be either repaired or replaced freed from charge.  Most used boat motors won’t be covered by a guaranty.  If you get a second user boat motor which wants repairs you’ll be stuck with the bills.  Your best bet is to buy a second hand boat motor from a reputable dealer.  If buying your used boat motor from an internet auction site it is best to stick with sellers who have an outstanding feedback rating and plenty of transactions. 

If the used boat motor is at present attached to a boat it makes sense to see it in action.  Take it for a test where you can actually see what it can do.  Ask the owner about any recent work or repairs that have done to the motor.  It’s best if you can see copies of the work orders and bills to get a real sense of the type of work that was required.  Always look carefully at the condition of the motor before you buy.  Look for signs of wear, welding, dents, gouges, and any other abnormalities.  You also want to have a compression test to test the cylinders.
