Every Generation Has Transportation Needs
He was almost obsessed with the idea of buying a new bike. He daydreamed about it during the daylight hours. He dreamed about it at night. Lance Armstrong was his hero. He even watched people ride their bikes through the park.
It consumed his thoughts. Buying mountain bike, buying mountain bike ran through his mind over and over again. He wanted to be out riding in the sunshine. He knew he had to wear a helmet, but, he could tolerate it. He’d buy one in the same color as his dream bike.
Some kids wanted scooters or roller skates. Some wanted to learn how to ice skate. Skiing was the favored sport for others, either downhill or cross country. He wanted the bike of his dreams. He got a job bagging groceries down at the supermarket. It didn’t pay much but the money would add up and he’d get the bike before long.
He came down the stairs and there was his mom at the kitchen table. She smiled at him and her eyes returned to the stack of cake decorating books lying in front of her. She got up and offered to scramble some eggs for him. As they chatted, she mentioned a friend who bought a diamondback bike last week. Her friend said it was a dream ride.
He said he’d look at those when the time came he could afford his new bike. They chatted about her cake decorating job and his lawn care jobs and the new one at the grocery store His time was filled for work and he was really glad the locations were close by. He was going over to weed a couple of flowerbeds for Mrs. Hanson later that morning.
His mom had a full day of baking planned. Someone was having a big party and had ordered three cakes. One was chocolate and she planned to decorate it like a hot air balloon, very colorful. The second was a refreshing lemon creme cake with sand dunes and a few sea gulls flying overhead. The last one was a big sheet cake and would show palm trees and the ocean and a pale yellow beach. There were not many times she decorated three cakes for one party.
Soon she would have enough for a down payment on the car of her dreams. She already had $5,000 saved up. When the time came she would take her son along to all the car dealers and they would look at cars together. Then maybe they would go shopping so he could look at all the diamondback bikes on sale.
