The Adoption Process
Steps To Apply For Foster and Adoptive Care
Those who decide they want to go and apply for foster care, can sometimes end up waiting a long time because of the process, and can experience many emotions with it. When someone decides they want to do this they are very willing for a child to come into their home and give them the support they need. While they have that interest in adopting a child, sometimes foresting a child is another option that they can do. When children end up in this process, they are in a real need for a family home, on the other hand a baby already has people waiting for them.
What Requirements You Need?
You need to give the Protective services and Department of Family a call. When you do that they will be able to provide you with a list of dates for orientation. During the class they will inform of what you have to have, to ensure that you meet their requirements of becoming foster parents. There is quite a fair bit involved. There is a required level of income that you need to have, to provide them with proof that you can support a family – fostering shouldn’t be about money. You should have a home that the state sees as being big enough for you to hold a family. If you have children there is a limit to how many you can have. You are not able to have more than 6 children that are below the age of 18, unless they are all under the age of 5.
What Are The Next Steps Involved?
Once you have finalized these class and you have what they need, you need to do more training of up to 20 hours. When completing this training they will give you suggestions on what could happen when you are fostering or adopting a child. They will give you tips in how to handle it. Then they will give you more information in going through the system. They will give you footage on what to except when you will go through this process. After you have passed these classes, a certificate will be awarded to you, give this to the local office and they will then provide you with water safety and CPR training. After this contact the following agency, Department of Family and they will come and meet you in you house.
Getting your home ready can be a nervous and anxious time, as you want your house to be perfect for that all important visit, but fear not as it may be less scary than you think. The department will give you the requirements that you need in your house in the form of a checklist, just ensure that you have it covered for their visit and you should be fine. After the house has been finally put in order, you will then finalize what ages you are happy to adopt and foster, and the disabilities that you could accept.
When the study and visit is complete, you have to wait to hear the final verdict, and this can be an emotional time. Once the study is read by the department they will be tell you whether or not you are accepted or denied, and if you are accepted they should give you an indication on when you should be expecting your foster or adoptive child. However, there are some families that could be waiting as it can take a while for this to happen. When this happens it could be because there is a family in front you with better favor, and you could be waiting a while.
